A couple recently asked me during an introductory meeting: what is fine art wedding photography, actually? It is a term many photographers put on their website, and it sounds expensive. Below I explain what is meant by it, and why I work differently myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wat betekent fine art trouwfotografie?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is no industry standard for the term. In practice fine art wedding photography refers to images made to be looked at as visual art, not only as a record of the day. The photographer deliberately chooses the location, the light, the composition, the styling and the poses, so that a coherent and styled story emerges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a serious way of working, and photographers who are good at it make beautiful images. It does ask something of your day, though: time, and a willingness to be directed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is fine art alleen voor filmfotografen?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No. Many photographers who work on film use the term, which makes it seem as though the two belong together, but it is about the approach and not about the equipment. Digital works just as well. Shooting analogue on a wedding day says something about the look and about the pace of the photographer, not about whether they direct or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference with documentary wedding photography<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The real distinction is not in the term, but in the question of who adapts: the day to the photographer, or the photographer to the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fine art photographer adds themselves to the day. They place you where the light is beautiful, guide the hands, wait for the right posture. A documentary photographer does the opposite and stays out of the picture. I work documentary style: I direct nothing, I blend in among your guests and capture the atmosphere without you noticing. If there is a portrait moment it is short, and even then I say little more than where we are going to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you often read is that documentary photography means you are not concerned with form. That is not true. All day long I watch composition, background and the direction of the light, and I deliberately reach for my manual Voigtl\u00e4nder 40mm when I want an image with a bit more character. The difference is that I do not stop the moment for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What does this mean for your choice?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Do not look at the word on the website, look at the work. Two questions help with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are the people in the photos looking at the camera, or at each other? And does a reportage also show you the messy parts, the waiting, the conversations, the guests, or does the series consist mainly of highlights that look staged? That tells you more about how someone works than any term does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you want a day that looks like a magazine and you enjoy posing, a fine art photographer is a good fit. If you want to see your day back as it really was, my way of working suits you better. Neither is better, they simply produce a very different kind of memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
